SEGA and Atlus have released more details on the gameplay of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance including new demons and mechanics.
For the uninitiated, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is an enhanced edition of Shin Megami Tensei V and will feature “an all-new storyline featuring new locations, demons, and choices to make” along with enhanced gameplay.
New Demons
3 new demons have been revealed for Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, hailing from West and South African influences.
Onyankopon – A sky god of the Ashanti people and other tribes in West Africa. An alias of the supreme god Nyame, said to mean “the all-knowing and all-seeing.”
Anansi – A folkloric hero of the Ashanti and other tribes in West Africa. He is depicted as a trickster who gets by on his wit and cunning.
Nyami Nyami – The Zambezi River god of the Tonga and Lozi tribes of southern Africa. He has the body of a snake and the head of a fish or dragon. He is said to protect people near the water and provide them with food.
Shakan
Hidden in Shinjuku, Shakan is a sacred space within Bethel forbidden to outsiders that doubles as new dungeon in the Canon of Vengeance. To ward off intruders, angelic sentries stand guard while magical contraptions invert the ceilings and floors.
Apotheosis
In addition to fusion, the World of Shadows also lets you use Apotheosis to strengthen Nahobino and your allies. To get there, just stop by a leyline fount.
Learning Miracles
By using Glory, a currency found in Da’at, Nahobino can gain new Miracles. These abilities will aid you while
exploring Da’at or battling enemies. They can even affect fusion, skill potentials, and leveling. Some can also be toggled on and off to suit your needs.
New Maximum Level
Fulfilling certain conditions will unlock Moral Transcendence, a new Miracle that allows you to raise the level cap of the Nahobino and his allies from 99 to 150.
New Miracle – Estoma Field
This new technique allows you to produce a magical barrier by using up some of the Magatsuhi Gauge. While active, you will not be detected by enemies. If you end up encountering an enemy, you’ll be able to avoid a battle against them.
Essence Fusion
This type of fusion utilizes Essences: copied, astral forms of demons’ abilities which you find throughout Da’at. Essences exist for each demon, and when the protagonist or your demonic allies fuse with one of them, you’ll be able to change their affinity resistances and skills. Feel free to experiment with all kinds of skill combinations for your party!
Sub Quests
Take on sub quests from demons and human characters you encounter in both Da’at and Tokyo on your adventure. By clearing them, you’ll be able to receive various rewards. There’s a wide variety of sub quests to take on, including Moon Phase Sub quests that require you to finish specific tasks within a moon’s cycle as well as sub quests that allow you to play as demons.
Sub Quest – Return of the True Demon
Return of the True Demon, a DLC sub quest from the original Shin Megami Tensei V, is included in
the base game of SMT V: Vengeance. Upon fulfilling the right conditions, Demi-fiend will accompany you as a guest character in your party. Prepare to push your skills to the limit in one of the game’s toughest quests!
Virtual Trainer
Located in the Terminal Room of the Diet Building, the virtual trainer allows you to challenge past foes in either a single fight or a gauntlet of battles. You can face them at their original strength in Original Mode or take on even more powerful versions of them in Challenge Mode. Each time you complete Challenge Mode, the enemies’ levels will increase by 100. Being defeated will still result in a game over, so it is recommended that you save before using the virtual trainer.
New Game
Upon clearing the game, you can carry over your previous data and keep your demons’ stats in a fresh, new playthrough. Choose between 3 options according to your playstyle, including the all-new Godborn option which has special requirements to unlock.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is slated to launch on June 21, 2024, for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam.
