Shin Megami Tensei V’s new Bethel trailer shows us more demons alongside a greater idea of the world and plot of the game.
In previous trailers, it’s explained that Bethel is a group in post-apocalyptic Tokyo attempting to fight against the demons with the help of angels. The word Bethel itself is a place mentioned in The Bible. This likely implies that they will take the role of the law faction within SMT’s traditional Law-Neutral-Chaos dynamic.
The voice-over from the trailer seems to be primarily from the character Ichiro Dazai. What’s interesting is that he repeatedly says that he wishes to become stronger. This kind of dialogue is usually saved for chaos characters but he wants this strength to protect people from the demons, suggesting he’ll be law aligned. Then again, for all, we know they might not have traditional alignments in this game.
The trailer also formally introduces the golden angel character seen on the box art. Her last line about carrying out “his” (likely God’s) will “as one” hints that she’ll be attempting to fuse herself with someone, perhaps Dazai. It wouldn’t be the first time SMT deities have done so.
A character we’re seeing for the first time is a man in what looks like an imperial Japanese uniform and katana, very reminiscent of fan favourite character Raidou Kuzunoha XIV. A distant relative perhaps? There’s even a rumour going around the two share the same voice actor. I could see him playing a similar role as Raidou or Dante in SMT III: Nocturne as a kind of rival you fight several times throughout the game.
The trailer also gives us a look at a bunch of returning demons including Innana, Danu, Black Frost and Sukuna-Hikona.
Shin Megami Tensei V’s Bethel Trailer ultimately raises more questions about the game. We’ll see how they’re answered when the game finally releases.
