Fans of Shin Megami Tensei, on finding out that the third game of the series, Nocturne, would be getting a HD remaster, were probably waiting on news about Dante appearing in the game. The good news: a new trailer confirms his presence, which you can watch below:
The bad news? He’s part of a “Maniacs / Maniax DLC Pack”, which will cost 980 yen when the game launches 29 October 2020 in Japan (Spring 2021 worldwide). This seems to match up with the original Japanese release of the Maniax edition which launched a year after the original Nocturne. Western territories received the Maniax edition when the game was localized.
The base Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne HD Remaster will have guest character Raidou Kuzunoha, who will be replaced by Dante with the purchase of the “Maniacs / Maniax Pack”, and selecting the “New Game ~ Maniacs / Maniax ~” option from the title screen. The title screen loop and logo will also change accordingly. Another addition is the “Pierce” effect to Dante’s “Son’s Oath” skill.
It’s probably disappointing to users that Dante is paid, but Dante’s original appearance in the series was a separate version anyway, so perhaps this was inevitable. Still though, since it’s the same game, they could have opted to include him as DLC, but not paid. Surely this would have been a good way to introduce Devil May Cry fans to the utter brutality that is the Shin Megami Tensei difficulty curve without putting Dante behind a pay wall?
On the flip side, Dante’s also not an Atlus property, so it could be on Capcom that he’s separate from the base game. Would you be getting it?
