Things are about to get sweaty because competitive first-person shooter Valorant is about to hit consoles, bringing precise gunplay to controllers.
At Summer Game Fest 2024, Riot Games took the stage and announced that a limited beta for Valorant is set to arrive next week for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The announcement was made by Andy Ho, Valorant executive producer, and Arnar Gylfason, production director on stage.
They revealed that Valorant has been ported over to consoles, but will still keep the gameplay core the same as its PC counterpart.
The console versions will also maintain parity with the PC version when it comes to content and balance updates, but no crossplay will be supported due to differences in control methods – simply put, the mouse and keyboard provide a more precise aim as compared to controllers, thus leading to disadvantages.
That said, the game will have cross-progression and shared inventory for cosmetics, so there is no need to restart an account from scratch and purchase the skins again.
“When exploring whether to bring Valorant to additional platforms, we knew we had to be able to offer the same uncompromising, competitive experience that we’ve provided to PC players for years: a precise, team-based, tactical shooter,” said Gylfason.
“We were adamant that Valorant’s core, competitive gameplay must feel natural on a controller; and – if we couldn’t deliver on that gameplay promise – we had to be prepared to walk away from it. We hope we nailed it, but ultimately, our players will have the final say.”
This is not the first sign that Valorant is moving to other platforms aside from PC, as recently, a mobile version of the popular FPS has been approved in China, suggesting a release in the country soon.
