In a recent interview, Eui-jong Lee, Executive Project Director for The Seven Deadly Sins: Idle Adventure, offered an in-depth look at the development process and key features of the game. This mobile adaptation of the popular anime series set to release on August 12 aims to bring the rich world of The Seven Deadly Sins to players’ fingertips through innovative idle gameplay mechanics
Character Adaptation and Storytelling
The team behind The Seven Deadly Sins: Idle Adventure faced the challenge of translating the diverse cast of characters and their unique abilities into engaging gameplay elements. Lee explained their approach: “We implemented each character’s unique abilities into distinctive skills and abilities within the game.” This gives each character a unique strategic style, allowing players to clearly feel and understand the individual characteristics of each.”
Beyond gameplay mechanics, the team also focused on preserving the narrative depth of the original series. “The story arc of each character was integrated into the world of The Seven Deadly Sins: IDLE Adventure through the use of in-game backgrounds and story cutscenes, allowing players to experience and enjoy the story of the game with deepened understanding,” Lee added. This attention to storytelling ensures that fans of the series will find a familiar and immersive experience within the game.
Transitioning to Idle Gameplay
Recognizing the potential difficulty in transitioning players to an idle game format, the development team implemented a carefully structured onboarding process. Lee described their strategy: “We adopted a gradual approach to unlocking content so that users would not feel overwhelmed with an outpouring of information and complex systems when they first play the game.”
An intuitive tutorial system complements this gradual unveiling of game features. “We included step-by-step tutorials to help players understand the core mechanics and features within the game,” Lee said. “These tutorials help players learn and familiarize themselves with the game’s key features, which help them get used to the idle gameplay.” By easing players into the idle format, the team aims to create a smooth and enjoyable experience for both newcomers and veteran gamers alike.
Long-term Player Engagement
To keep players invested over extended periods, the game incorporates a variety of content that evolves with player progress. Lee elaborated on this design philosophy: “We give simple missions and quests in the earlier stages to let the players familiarize themselves with the game, and we unlock more complex and challenging content over time.”
The game also draws inspiration from traditional RPG elements to foster a sense of growth and achievement. “We also introduced the growth element of an RPG, in which players get to set and achieve their own goals. Players will develop their characters and feel accomplished as they reach their goals,” Lee explained. This combination of progressively challenging content and character development aims to create a compelling long-term gameplay experience.
One-Tap Draw System
A key feature of The Seven Deadly Sins: Idle Adventure is its One-Tap Draw system, a gacha-style mechanic designed for user-friendly daily rewards. Lee shared the inspiration behind this system: “The One-Tap Draw system was inspired by the card draw system in our previous work, The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross. We reflected on the recent trend in the card system, improving it to the One-Tap Draw system players see in The Seven Deadly Sins: IDLE Adventure.”
Further emphasizing its importance, Lee added, “The One-Tap Draw system is a very important part of the game as it is closely related to all the growth systems in The Seven Deadly Sins: IDLE Adventure. It is easy to use, allowing players to quickly receive rewards without going through complicated procedures.” This streamlined approach to rewards aims to enhance player engagement and satisfaction.
Art Style and Character Design
The game’s distinctive chibi art style presented unique challenges in adapting the original character designs. Lee described the process: “The biggest challenge was simplifying each character’s design into a chibi-style while maintaining their unique characteristics. We tried to keep the overall design of the characters from the original work and make it more adorable by emphasizing the character’s key design elements and reducing unnecessary details.”
The team also focused on bringing these chibi characters to life through animation. “We also kept the animations and interactions of the characters simple and lively to make them look natural,” Lee noted. “This gives the game a unique and engaging visual, making the overall atmosphere of the game bright and friendly.” The result is a charming visual style that sets the game apart while staying true to the spirit of the original series.
Monetization Strategy
Addressing the delicate balance between game sustainability and player satisfaction, Lee outlined their approach to monetization: “The Seven Deadly Sins: IDLE Adventure consistently provides basic items and resources needed to enjoy the game, which help users to fully enjoy the game with or without spending money.”
To ensure players feel rewarded without the pressure to spend, Lee explained, “Various rewards will be given to players through daily rewards, events and quests, giving them a sense of accomplishment in the gameplay itself. These rewards will keep players coming back to the game to enjoy playing without feeling the need to spend much.” This strategy aims to create a fair and enjoyable experience for all players, regardless of their spending habits.
Player Feedback and Improvements
The open beta phase proved crucial in refining the game based on player input said the Seven Deadly Sins Idle Adventure director. Lee highlighted a significant area of improvement: “I would say the player feedback regarding the game interface was an important one as it led the team to revamp the overall UI design. We rearranged the menus and icons and made key features more accessible to improve the user experience.”
This responsiveness to player feedback extended beyond UI improvements. “We also enhanced the tutorials of the game to make it easier for new users to get used to the game,” Lee added. This iterative approach to development demonstrates the team’s commitment to creating a user-friendly and enjoyable experience.
