In light of the recent release of Sonic X Shadow Generations, Sega employees have pulled back the curtain on their writing process for Sonic the Hedgehog games. The revelation comes as fans discuss the storytelling in Shadow Generations, a new campaign featuring Sonic’s rival character exploring his origins and newly discovered Doom Powers.
Ian Flynn, known for his work on both Archie and IDW Sonic comics as well as recent games like Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Superstars, served as the primary writer for Shadow Generations. However, Sega officials have emphasized that the final product emerged from a carefully structured collaborative process.
Katie Chrzanowski, Sonic the Hedgehog brand and community manager, clarified via social media that Flynn’s writing underwent thorough review and refinement through collaboration between the Sonic lore team and Sega of Japan. Building on this, Sonic lore manager Chris Hernandez detailed their workflow: the lore team first develops an outline, which Flynn then expands into a full script. This script goes through multiple iterations until all parties, including Sega of Japan, reach consensus.
It’s worth noting that while Ian WAS the primary writer, that doesn’t mean it all went unchecked. The Lore team & SEGA Japan collaborated on it, things were tweaked until everyone was happy. Putting all our names there would undermine how much Ian DID do, as this wasn’t our role.

The game also features a rewritten script for the remastered Sonic Generations portion, aligning it with recent franchise entries. While the extent of Sonic Team’s direct involvement in the writing process remains unclear, the multiple layers of oversight ensure narrative consistency across the franchise.
So the Lore Team & SEGA of Japan make the story and Ian turns it into a script? Or does Ian also help in making the story?

The writing approach has sparked discussion within the Sonic community, with some fans debating whether Flynn should continue as lead writer or if veterans like Eitaro Toyoda should take the helm. Despite these discussions, Sonic X Shadow Generations has received praise as a standout entry in the series, with fans expressing hope that its gameplay innovations might influence future titles, including a potential Sonic Frontiers sequel.
