Sega has officially unveiled Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, reviving the classic ninja action series. The announcement comes as part of today’s State of Play presentation, following Sega’s initial tease of legacy franchise revivals at The Game Awards 2023. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is set to launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on August 29, 2025, with pre-orders now available.
The game is being developed through a collaboration between Sega of Japan and Lizardcube, known for their work on Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and Streets of Rage 4. Lizardcube’s signature hand-drawn art style will bring Joe Musashi’s latest adventure to life.
Art of Vengeance follows series protagonist Joe Musashi on a revenge-driven quest after suffering a personal tragedy. The game maintains the level-based structure of classic Shinobi titles while introducing new combat mechanics and exploration elements. Players can revisit previous stages to uncover secrets using abilities gained later in the game.
“Shinobi was first released more than 30 years ago. To many players, the title Shinobi may feel nostalgic, but we believe there are also many players who have never heard of it before. We really hope that fans of both the original series as well as newer players will give the new Shinobi a try and become fans of our modern approach to the series.” said Toru Ohara, Chief Producer Sega of Japan.

The development team has emphasized the game’s fluid combat system, featuring varied attack combinations with Musashi’s katana and kunai. Special abilities include the “Shinobi Execution” attack, fitting the game’s vengeance theme. While paying homage to classics like The Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III, the game tells an entirely new story with modern gameplay elements.
