SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays definitely aims to appeal, an utopia of sorts for Gundam fans, mashing the various popular iterations into one game. Who wouldn’t like seeing all your favourite mechs in one place? For the die-hard fan wanting to immerse yourself in the world of Gundam, this is the title for you. Experience different storylines in the Gundam universe through the various campaigns!
The game can get quite confusing if you’re completely blind to the Gundam series. There’ll be loads and loads of characters, each with their plot lines. If you’re going to be able to process a degree of information overload, then you might still be able to enjoy this title. The situation only gets even more complex when NPCs explain certain anime-only, but still key, events.
As with any turn-based strategy game, battles involves moving your units on your turn, followed by the enemy. Choose to attack with a unit, the type of attack, and the action will occur. The same thing will happen if you get attacked in return, and you can choose the most effective defense type. Attack and defense strength can be increased with the help of nearby units. You can also combine to perform a combination attack on a clump of enemies.
Units will always fight within a Group. While they can move individually, they are naturally stronger together. Choose “Move All” to simultaneously move units and attack the same foe. It can certainly make things easier for the beginning phases of battle. A Morale System also exists. A unit that battles well will gain morale and land critical strikes. Conversely, if they keep missing, they become weaker. Apart from the main objective, there are also side objectives you can complete. These side objectives can give you the chance to battle powerful foes with special abilities. You can acquire these abilities for yourself if you defeat such foes.
Last but not least, units and characters can level up. Units refer to the mecha, and you can choose which part to upgrade. Characters refer to pilots, who will automatically increase their stats and acquire new abilities. It seamlessly coexists with the customization system.
You can customize before starting a mission. Here, you can modify units and battle tactics. Add in new units, change them, upgrade or level units, even create your own custom character, and yet more you can do in a robust system. Feel free to experiment! There is a slight caveat though: there are no good or clear tutorials you can refer to. The battles and customizations are arguably quite important in this game, but explanations may be lacking, especially for newbies.
SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays could make a case for being a more niche title. Fans can find a solid strategy game, with plenty of complexity and characters to dive into. If you’re a Gundam and/or strategy game fan, then don’t hesitate to pick this up!
