The Holly Reporter announced that the classic graphic novel Scott Pilgrim will be getting a new anime adaptation that will be produced by Netlflix and animated by Science Saru, the studio that worked on popular modern anime like Devil Crybaby, Lu Over The Wall and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!.
The original writer of the graphic novel Brian Lee O’Malley will be acting as the writer and executive producer for the project alongside BenDavid Grabinski who is currently working on the ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark’ revival. Science Saru’s CEO Eunyoung Choi will be the producer and Abel Góngora will act as the director.
Edgar Wright who directed the 2010 Hollywood live-action adaption of the series, ‘Scott Pilgrim vs The World’, and producing partner Nira Park will also receive executive producer credits. Other film alumni acting as execs include Marc Platt, Jared LeBoff, and Adam Seigel of Marc Platt Productions, and Michael Bacall.
The six-volume graphic novel of Scott Pilgrim was released between 2004 and 2010. The comic takes a lot of inspiration from anime and manga, right down to the tankōban style formatting of each volume with black and white illustrations.
Scott Pilgrim is the story of an average 20-something Scott Pilgrim who soon starts dating the elusive Ramona Flowers however in order to date her, he must first defeat her 7 evil exes and undergo a journey of self-discovery along the way.
The series has since been adapted into an aforementioned 2010 movie by Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Hot Fuzz) as well as a video game by Ubisoft which was infamously taken down from online stores and took years of fan demand for it to be returned. You can now play the game on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.
There is currently no release period for the Scott Pilgrim anime but more will likely be announced closer to the release date.
