Sadako Yamamura the main antagonist of the iconic Japanese horror series Ringu (The Ring) has now opened her own youtube channel.
Film production company Kadokawa opened the youtube channel to promote the upcoming film Sadako DX, the latest film in the franchise. Her first major video titled ‘I’m Sadako😊I’m starting a YouTube 💓 Watch me! [ROOM TOUR]’ has Sadako introduce her youtube channel.
Much like in the films, Sadako does not talk, rather her dialogue is given via subtitles across the bottom of the screen. Sadako explains that this channel will show off the ‘teenage girl’ side of her character. She then crawls out of a TV and gives a tour of her room.
For future content, Sadako says that she will be doing a multitude of activities including playing video games, cooking food, singing (somehow), and Q&A segments. The first game she plans to play is the horror multiplayer game Dead by Daylight where she was recently announced as a new killer character.
In the movies, anyone who watches Sadako’s cursed videotape will be killed by her in seven days. The image of Sadako coming out of television to murder her victims has become iconic in horror cinema. Whether these youtube videos will likewise curse those who watch them has yet to be seen. I suppose I will personally find out by next week.
It should be noted that this is not the first time that a Japanese horror movie character made a social media account. In 2016, mother-son duo Kayako and Toshio Saeki from the Ju-on (The Grudge) franchise made an Instagram account to promote the then-upcoming film Sadako vs Kayako which saw them go up against Sadako in a crossover. The Instagram contains pictures of the two’s ‘ordinary’ house life.
Sadako DX is due to release in Japan during the Fall of 2022.
