Terrible Toybox, Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games are coming together to bring Return to Monkey Island, with a release date set to 2022.
The sixth instalment to the Monkey Island franchise was initially teased as an April Fool’s joke by its creator, Ron Gilbert. However, earlier today, it was revealed that it was not, in fact, a joke. Instead, it is very real, as revealed by its announcement trailer below:
Return to Monkey Island is being developed by Gilbert’s studio, Terrible Toybox together with Lucasfilm Games (previously known as LucasArts) the publisher of the earlier Monkey Island titles. However, for the latest entry in the series, the game is published by Devolver Digital.
Return to Monkey Island follows the events of 1991’s Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. It will also include references and characters from later titles, such as Murray the Demonic Talking Skull as featured in the trailer.
Besides Gilbert, fellow Monkey Island writer Dave Grossman will also be reprising his role for the new entry. The game also features music from Michael Land, Peter McConnnell and Clint Bajakian. Dominic Armato will also be coming back as the voice of protagonist Guybrush Threepwood.
