The fowl creature is part of a new area, the Bozjan Southern Front. This is an extension of an area previously introduced in the “Return to Ivalice” raids. The areas are themed after Final Fantasy XII, where players there had to fight the Chocobo as well. Additionally, the red Chocobo was also a part of the raid series back then.
In Final Fantasy XIV, the Red Chocobo is one of the enemies you’ll fight in the new “Critical Engagements”. Named Red Comet, the beast has access to Meteor, an incredibly elaborate move players have to maneuver out of the way of.
Over the weekend, many players took to Twitter and Reddit to vent their frustrations with the bird, including comparing it to another famous red murderer, Mobile Suit Gundam’s Char “The Red Comet” Aznable. A lot of the players took the beatdowns in jest, with many great photoshops of the bird.
For those who are unaware, Chocobos are one of the most iconic creatures to come out of Final Fantasy. The large birds have taken on all sorts of looks based on their individual games’ art styles, with the latter games adopting a more realistic look for the birds.
The Red Comet fight seems to be more closely based on their appearance in Final Fantasy Tactics, with the fight’s soundtrack even using a remixed version of the theme from Tactics.
