Deadline has reported that a Power Rangers series is reportedly being developed for Netflix, at least according to Hasbro President of Global Television Michael Lombardo.
In the interview, Lombardo mentions that they have big plans for Saban’s western adaptation of one of the most iconic Tokusatsu series.
“Since we set up Power Rangers with Jonathan, we pitched really a whole-world approach. It’s not just one show, it is shows followed by films, some kids’ programming. We have found a great writing partner for him, they are off. Knock on wood, Netflix is excited, we’re excited, we hope to have some news soon.”
It’s no surprise that they would be expanding the Power Rangers brand in the west with Netflix- there was a Power Rangers live-action movie released several years ago, which was even available on Netflix.
The brand has also been expanding into videogames, with mobile games as well as the cult hit Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid drumming up a lot of excitement for the brand.
Lomabardo also had kind words to say about the passing of Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner, saying that the aggressive expansion into scripted programming was very much in his line with the late lead’s vision.
“Look, Brian’s passing… I won’t say surprised everybody but it was still very much felt in the company in a very profound way. He had a vision of how Hasbro would morph from a toy company to a brand company; he started that, and I do believe the company continues to be very bullish on that. That is the future they see, and the entertainment part of that is critical to that vision.
So, every message we’ve gotten is full steam ahead. He’s missed. He loved it, he liked getting in the weeds and so, on a personal level, that connection is gone, but I think Hasbro is firmly in this business.”
