In an unprecedented celebration of Japan’s rich artistic heritage, the Pokemon franchise takes an elegant leap into the world of traditional craftsmanship with the Pokemon X Kogei Exhibition. Opening its doors at Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills Gallery from November 1, 2024, through February 2, 2025, this innovative showcase bridges the gap between beloved pocket monsters and centuries-old Japanese artistry.
The exhibition brings together 20 of Japan’s most distinguished craft artists, including Living National Treasure Morihito Katsura and emerging talent Taiichiro Yoshida, who have created over 70 masterpieces that reimagine Pokémon through the lens of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. A stunning large-scale Venusaur artwork stands as the centerpiece among an diverse collection ranging from intricately designed kimonos to handcrafted pottery.
What makes this exhibition particularly fascinating is the natural parallel between Pokémon elements and traditional craft materials. The fundamental Pokémon types – Grass, Fire, Water, Ground, Steel, and Electric – mirror the essential elements used in Japanese crafts: grass, fire, water, earth, and metal, with modern electric techniques completing the parallel. This connection is beautifully illustrated in ceramic creation, where artisans combine earth (clay), water, metal oxide pigments, and fire in the kiln, often utilizing electric potter’s wheels in the process.
The Pokemon X Kogei exhibition experience extends beyond the gallery space with a specialized shop offering exclusive merchandise. Collectors can find items ranging from affordable souvenirs like pins and masking tape to premium pieces such as silver pendants. A highlight among the merchandise is the special Kimono Pikachu plush, featuring the traditional kōji tsunagi pattern.
