Game Freak, the game developers behind the Pokemon franchise had been reported to have their data breached as a result of a hack and it sounded pretty significant. The leaked stolen data involves codenames for their 10th generation Pokémon games and even Nintendo’s next-gen console, perhaps the much anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.
According to a report by Nintendo Life, data leaked includes the codename of Nintendo’s next-gen console (reportedly “Ounce”), the codename of the unannounced 10th generation Pokémon game (reportedly “Gaia”), and the codename of the announced Pokemon Legends: Z-A (“Ikkaku”).
Game Freak has issued a statement confirming the company suffered a data breach in August 2024.
The company said its server was illegally accessed, with 2,606 cases of current, former, and contract employee names and email addresses were compromised from this breach. The official statement in Japanese with the 10th October 2024 date, does not mention the Pokémon data that has emerged since. A translated version of the official statement can be found here, courtesy of Nintendo Everything.
In the statement, Game Freak apologized to all those affected by the data breach and insisted the vulnerability at the heart of the hack was since rebuilt.
The leaks had revealed a dual version of the 10th gen pokemon game by the codename (“K” and “N”) which Nintendo might have plans for it to be a cross-gen title. The earlier report by Nintendo Life, had also mentioned that “Ounce” is to be the game’s target platform but it allegedly ending up to be a cross-gen title means that it may come to the Nintendo Switch, “the game is at least being tested for the current Switch as well” they reported according to sources.
Another Pokémon game codenamed “Synapse” is also reportedly to have been leaked. Synapse was never announced but the game is said to be co-developed with another studio. Interestingly, some reports had indicated that the game may be leaning to be a PvP “Splatoon-like game” or a MMO title.
On top of that, source codes for the Pokemon titles on the DS which include HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black 2 and White 2 have reportedly also been leaked, resulting in stolen unused assets for Pokémon and even the game’s music tracks to pop up online.

The games aren’t the only things that were compromised to which IGN reported that “there is plot information relating to an unreleased sequel to 2019’s Detective Pikachu movie, supposedly called The Great Detective Pikachu.”, they stated “This movie was reportedly directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer, Kong: Skull Island) and planned for release in 2024, so it’s unclear what happened to it”.
“Indeed, there is evidence to suggest a trilogy of live-action Pokémon movies was at one time considered, with the third apparently revolving around the Game Boy.” IGN also stated. An unannounced Netflix live action show also had a mention among the many leaks.
Leaks concerning information on pokemon lore was also reported to have emerged online.
