At Sony‘s Corporate Strategy Meeting held 26 May 2021, the discussion for bringing more Playstation IPs to the mobile market has been put on the table. The convergence of “Social and Entertainment” makes communication increasingly important with regards to entertainment, which can be seen in Sony’s investment in Discord.
With the large catalog of first-party Playstation IPs, a transition to mobile gaming to complement their AAA or live-service games is being looked at. They will be doing so through some franchises, though specifics were not provided at this juncture. Due to experiencing some early success with experimenting with mobile games and apps with the intention to provide more choice to gamers, a more concerted effort to expand to the market is only natural.
You can see for yourself just a few of their mobile experiments like their offerings on Google Play, with their IPs coming together in a title like Playstation All-Stars Island, or the aforementioned companion apps.
There’s already hints at expansion in service like the Playstation Plus Video Pass for Sony Pictures’ offerings, so the subscription service doing something similar to Xbox’s Game Pass looks pretty likely too. In any case, as services become increasingly interconnected, we’ll have to see about its implementation before further comparisons can be made.
