This holiday season, make sure to get your game on with some great gift recommendations thanks to our friends from PlayStation. Be it for your friends or even as a treat for yourself after a long year, there’s a lot to check out no matter if you’re gaming on the PS4 or PS5 systems.
PS5 – Enjoy Your Life In Next Gen
It’s no surprise that the PS5 is one of the hottest consoles this year. For those of you who managed to pick one up, there’s plenty of gifts to make the most out of PlayStation’s leading console.
DualSense Controllers
In our review of the PS5, we couldn’t stop praising the DualSense Controller- it’s got everything from the amazing haptic feedback, to the revolutionary adaptive triggers. Now, a year after its launch, it’s even got a host of new colors to really get a controller that screams you.
Is red your signature color because it makes you feel like you’re going three times faster? Or do you just want more controllers so you can finally do a first-to-ten in Guilty Gear to decide who’s doing the dishes? Make sure to pick up a spare controller for the perfect gift.
Available in three colors:
Best paired with: Your favorite game, obviously.
Pulse 3D Headset
For the atmospheric gamer, the PS5’s 3D Audio is a godsend. Forget about things like taxes and repair fees for your replacing the battery on your car as you slip on a pair of headphones and enjoy the atmospheric worlds of Boletaria or Atropos with this high-definition audio.
If the PlayStation gamer in your life hasn’t tried it out yet, why not introduce them to it with the Pulse 3D Headset? They’re comfy and the perfect way to escape the doldrum of everyday life as you sink into your favorite PS5-enhanced games.
Best paired with: Returnal, Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut
Media Remote
If you’re using the PS5 to watch all your favorite movies, the Media Remote is a must-have. With playback buttons to navigate menus, never have to worry about the awkward stint of using your analog sticks to type or accidentally hitting a button and skipping past important scenes.
If you’re living with a non-gamer, this is the best way to warm them up to your PS5- it’s not just a FIFA machine, it’s also a great way to cuddle up and binge watch Cowboy Bebop together.
Best paired with: Someone you care about and a warm blanket
Accessories for the PS4
If you’re using the PS4 platform, never fret- there’s still plenty of gift options for you as well. These include the evergreen (or any color, really) gift of new controllers, as well as the all-new experience of VR.
Dualshock 4 Controller
Similar to the Dualsense, the Dualshock 4 is a great controller featuring colored lights and a built-in touchpad. Better yet, over the PS4’s long life cycle, there’s a whole host of colors to choose from to really get the controller that screams you.
These great controllers come in a variety of colors, including:
Best paired with: any game, your favorite people or even, other Dualshock 4 controllers for a whole set
PSVR
Want to be the coolest parent/aunt/partner? The PSVR headset will take whoever’s using it into another world as you put it on and experience gaming in an entirely new way. Be a superhero in titles like Marvel’s Iron Man VR or commit unspeakable acts of murder with Hitman III in VR for a truly immersive experience.
Best yet, its lightweight build means you won’t have to worry about hurting yourself enjoying all the virtual worlds have to offer.
Best paired with: Any of the great PSVR games or a giftcard to let your loved ones buy the ones they want.
Play Has No Limits With These Great Games
Of course, if you’re a gamer, there’s little else better than actual games. 2021 has been full of amazing releases- why not surprise someone special in your life with something they might have had to miss due to their hectic real life?
These include titles for every flavor of gamer- from the solo purist looking to explore alien worlds, to the sports-loving gamer looking to manage Lionel Messi better than any club owner ever could.
Returnal (PS5)
Returnal is, well, an experience. Imagine the creepy horror of the Space Jockey scene from the original Alien, then extract that mood and put it over a whole game. Featuring challenging difficulty and rogue-lite gameplay as you constantly loop time to escape Atropos, it’s the perfect game to just chill out over an afternoon as you try to navigate through the game’s various biomes, picking up alien technology and figuring out why you’re being chased by a Spaceman.
Mix that with its great use of the PS5’s features like its excellent use of haptic feedback and adaptive triggers- heck, even combine it with the Pulse 3D headset to enjoy the 3D audio and have a great, immersive and downright spooky experience.
Best paired with: Pulse 3D Headphones for that sweet atmospheric sound. Check out our Returnal review here and see why our editor can’t stop raving about it.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart (PS5)
If you really want to show off your brand-new PS5, this is the game to play. From its gorgeous visuals to its hilarious writing, this game stands in a league of its own as an experience. You play as the eponymous Ratchet & Clank, stopping Dr Nefarious after he gets interdimensional travel involved (which conveniently shows off the PS5’s lightning fast load times while also boasting gorgeous visuals you’d think would be out of a movie.
It’s also a great game for anyone with younger ones in the family- no soldiers getting dismembered or overly dark material, just a wholesome fun family adventure.
Best paired with: Dualsense controller and a free weekend. Read our review of the game here.
Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut (PS4 and PS5)
If you were a fan of Ghost of Tsushima on the PS4 there’s little reason to not pick up the fully realized Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut. It fixes many of the technical hurdles faced by its predecessor, sporting better loading times and even lip-synced Japanese dubs for those of you who want a Kurosawa-worthy experience in the boots of Jin Sakai as he fights off invaders.
Better yet., Director’s Cut includes the new Ikishima DLC- an additional chapter of the story where you get to take Jin on an all new adventure to learn about him more as a person, as well as pet adorable animals in the new Animal Sanctuaries.
Best Paired With: Pulse 3D Headphones. Check out our review of it here.
Death Stranding: The Director’s Cut (PS5)
Similar to Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding: The Director’s Cut lets you experience the renewed vision of auteur director Hideo Kojima. Play as Sam Porter Bridges, a man out on a mission to reunite America in the face of the Death Stranding- a cataclysmic event which saw the arrival of the monstrous BTs and drove the remains of humanity into shelters.
You wouldn’t think a game about delivering packages could be as good as Death Stranding, yet it pulls it off with unique gameplay focused on traversing the ruinous terrain of the United States. The Director’s Cut takes it up a notch with new features like jetpacks, robot companions and improved visuals to make the best of your time making America Whole Again.
Best Paired With: Pulse 3D Headphones and some good snacks. Check out our review here.
Deathloop (PS5)
If you like time loops, suave characters and a great aesthetic, look no further than Deathloop. Play as Colt as you relive the same day over and over in the world’s most violent reinterpretation of Groundhog Day and slay the Visionaries and finally break the loop and call it a day.
It’s not entirely the same though, since you can unlock upgrades that defy the loop to help make subsequent runs earlier. Similar to Returnal, this is a great game for those who want to just spend afternoons in playing a game, since you’ll want to make your runs as efficient as possible until you finally get The Perfect Run and break the loop, once and for all.
Best Paired With: Dualsense controller and Pulse 3D Headphones
