Playstation 5’s may still be scarce but Sony doesn’t seem to be having problems on their end. In a new financial report about their quarterly earnings which ended on June 30th, Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 has reached over 10.1 million units in sales worldwide. For the record, that makes it the fastest-selling Playstation console and about 3.5 million from beating the Wii U’s lifetime sales in less than a year.
They also revealed that revenue is up in their first quarter and Playstation plus users have risen. There are now a total of 46.3 million PS Plus Subscribers. Although the number of active users has decreased by around 10 million users. This refers to Playstion Plus accounts that have not used their account in the last month of the quarter. It implies that they haven’t engaged with PS Plus for a significant period of time.
With the Xbox Game pass being such a success, allowing players to gain access to numerous games for a small monthly fee, Sony’s marketing a PS Plus will be important to compete with them. As such, increasing PS Plus engagement will likely be something their marketing will work on in the coming years.
In terms of software Sony has also presented the sales figures for their most recent PS5 first-party titles:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales: Over 6.5 million copies sold so far. This is available on the PS4 and PS5.
- MLB the Show 21: Over 2 million copies sold so far. It is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: Over 1.1 million copies sold so far.
- Returnal: Over 560,000 copies have sold so far.
The financial report also says that the combined sales of PS4 and PS5 titles during Sony’s first-quarter add up to 63.3 million with around 10.5 million being first-party games. Around 71% were digital downloads.
The PS5 is allegedly available for purchase however finding one may prove to be difficult due to its stock shortage which Sony unfortunately believes will continue into 2022.
