Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) generation is the most profitable console generation to date.
This is according to new data shared by the company during the Business Segment Meeting 2024, following the financial report shared two weeks ago.
In the meeting presentation, it was revealed that the PS5 generation has brought in $106 billion in sales since its release in 2020.
This outpaced other past PlayStation consoles in its first four years, even the PlayStation 4 (PS4) generation. On the slide, PS4 has sold $107 billion, but that is across 7 years of its entire console generation, while PS5 sold $106 billion in the first 4 years.
That said, it is worth noting that this is talking about sales over the course of a console generation, and not about the specific console hardware or game sales themselves. In other words, this is about everything that the company sells during the generation period. So, the PS5 generation may still include PS4 releases and sales.
The presentation also revealed that the life-to-date spend during the PS5 generation is significantly higher compared to the PS5 generation. This part highlights earnings from DLC content, services, peripherals, and so on.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has brought in $731 per PS5 console on content, services, and peripherals, while the PS4 generation sees $580 being brought in on average. Notably, DLC content sales are up by 176%, services are up by 57%, and peripheral sales increased by 26%.
All in all, the PS5 generation is doing very well despite a rocky start.
