Pahang’s Tourism Committee is currently in talks with the publisher of Jujutsu Kaisen to obtain permission to build a Kento Nanami memorial in Kuantan.
In a press conference held at the Malaysia International Tourism Expo press conference on 16 April 2024, State Unity, Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Leong Yu Man said the government has not begun construction of the memorial.
He added that this was due to several matters that had to be ironed out especially regarding copyright and intellectual property laws.
Despite this, he assured that the committee is still interested in its establishment and has been in talks with the publisher since January as an intermediary. This is because the manga series author Gege Akutami seldom appears in public and does not wish to be under the spotlight.
In December last year, the state government expressed their interest in developing the memorial as a tourist attraction for fans after Kento Nanami famously voiced his desire to visit and settle down in Kuantan in episode 42 of the anime, shortly before his death.
Malaysian fans had also placed a landmark for the potential placement of a memorial shrine for the character near the shores of Pantai Kempadang in Kuantan on Google Maps, although the landmark has since been removed.
