Tan Qi Xyuan, an illustrator based in Malaysia, had designed a rather interesting submission for the 2020 Southeast Asia Overwatch Map Design Contest. While she was unable to make the deadline, Malaysians can be proud of her nevertheless, as the end result was quite a sight to behold.
The artist in question created a concept artwork of Georgetown, Penang, complete with just about every detail you can think of, from the Komtar building to the colonial shophouses. Furthermore, there were nods to famous eating locales such as the 888 Hokkien Mee, and even an acknowledgement of the Rapid Penang public transportation system that has been given a spruce. Another neat addition is the inclusion of red rickshaws that loop George Town. Staying true to the theme, the wheels on the rickshaws have been modified to become hoverpads.
It is quite the shame that the submission was never made, since something like this would have been interesting to see in Overwatch, as it features futuristic versions of real world locations. Current maps at the moment feature sites in South Korea and South Africa, so no location is too exotic for the game. Perhaps the artist can make another attempt at trying to include her work in the same contest that will likely be held next year. Be sure to drop by the artist’s Facebook page for more artwork and give her your support.
