The arguably long awaited Nintendo Switch upgrade may be releasing as soon as September or October 2021, according to Bloomberg’s sources. Assembly for the Nintendo Switch upgrade is slated for July, with the official announcement possibly coming ahead of E3 that will start 12 June. It’s possible that the console’s starting price will also be higher, as shortages in semiconductors have affected supplies for just about everything in tech. The older Switch model will gradually be phased out as the upgrade gets sold alongside its Lite counterpart.
As the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X continues to face supply issues, it remains to be seen how Nintendo will be able to meet consumer demand. Bloomberg notes Nintendo President, Shuntaro Furukawa, having said the company hadn’t been able to produce as many units as it liked, as demand for the console remains high.
The original Switch model got a refresh with a larger battery, and otherwise was mostly unchanged. The upgrade will supposedly carry a 7-inch Samsung OLED display and faster NVIDIA graphics silicon, enabling 4K output when docked to a TV. It’s probably too much to expect it will carry the same power of its larger home console brethren, but any tangible performance upgrade will be a welcome one at this point.
UPDATE (31 May 2021):
New images have surfaced to give an idea of what the supposed Nintendo Switch Pro will look like:
It’ll supposedly have a new dock design, with a bigger OLED screen thanks to thinner bezels, while keeping the original’s dimensions. The dock will have two USB 3.0 ports, and ethernet port, while also having support for the current model’s Joy-Cons. The price is apparently going to be roughly $300, to be revealed at E3 2021.
