Nintendo finally unveiled comprehensive details about its highly anticipated next-generation console during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. The presentation revealed the Nintendo Switch 2 release date, hardware specifications, and an impressive lineup of first-party and third-party titles.
Release Date and Hardware
The Nintendo Switch 2 will officially launch on June 5, 2025. However, Southeast Asian markets including Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines will see a later release window of July-September 2025. Nintendo is also working to launch online services, including Nintendo Switch Online and the Nintendo eShop, in these four countries, with specific launch timing details to be announced at a later date.
The hardware features significant upgrades, including a 1080p screen, 120fps capability, and 256GB of internal storage. While docked, the console will support 4K resolution. The dock itself includes a built-in fan to keep the system cool during intensive gameplay.
The mysterious “C” button on the right Joy-Con was revealed to stand for “Chat,” enabling new party chat features called GameChat, which allows players to communicate and view friends’ gameplay. This feature requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership but will be available without one until March 31, 2026. Additional hardware features include Joy-Cons that can function as mice, two USB inputs, 3D audio, and compatibility with MicroSD Express Cards for expanded storage. Nintendo will also offer a data transfer system from the original Switch to the Switch 2.
First-Party Titles
Mario Kart World was confirmed as a launch title, featuring vehicle variety, transformative power-ups, grinding, and wall-running mechanics. The game will include classic Grand Prix mode, a battle royale-style Knockout mode, and a Free Roam option in an open world environment.
Other first-party titles announced include:
- Donkey Kong: Bananza – a new 3D platformer releasing July 17, 2025
- Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment – covering events before Tears of the Kingdom, launching winter 2025
- Kirby Air Riders – a sequel to the GameCube classic directed by Masahiro Sakurai, coming in 2025

The presentation introduced GameShare, allowing players to enjoy local multiplayer games with just one copy of certain titles, similar to the Download Play feature from Nintendo DS games. Nintendo will sell two editions of the Switch 2 during its release date: a standalone console and a bundle with Mario Kart World. Pricing information was not announced during the Direct but was promised to be available later on the Switch 2 website.
