Nintendo has announced the new Game Builder Garage, a tool to help gamers learn the ins and outs of programming games on their Nintendo Switch.
The game will allow players to learn the basics of node-based programming, letting them make their own games on the Nintendo Switch. It also includes guided lessons, explaining to players all the mechanics of mapping buttons to actions.
The short trailer they put out explaining Game Builder Garage also announced the game’s release date, dropping June 11th.
Players will be able to make a variety of different games, from platformers, shooters and even fighting games. They’ll also be able to upload these online a la Mario Maker, so you’ll be able to share your creations with players all around the world.
One really cool feature they’ve added is that you won’t have to play the games alone. According to the tool’s website you’ll be able to make games with multiplayer support, so you can play with your friends. Additionally, the games you make can also support the Nintendo Switch’s quirks, such as playing with split joycons instead of a whole controller.
It also looks like you’ll be allowed to create your own assets to some degree, as the trailer shows someone creating their own Game & Watch styled sprites.
It’s not surprising that Nintendo would go the route of making a whole game maker, considering the popularity of Mario Maker which was limited to making sidescrolling platformers.
