Sunrise has announced a new addition to the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED franchise with “SEED FREEDOM ZERO,” a project that will serve as a bridge between Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY and the recently released SEED FREEDOM movie.
The announcement came during a special franchise event featuring key creative figures, including voice actor Soichiro Hoshi (Kira Yamato), director Mitsuo Fukuda, and producer Hisakazu Naka. While the format of FREEDOM ZERO remains unspecified, director Fukuda revealed that the project has been in development for two decades, originally conceived as an OVA in the style of Mobile Suit Variations.
According to Fukuda, the team has made significant progress on the production, completing the script and approximately half of the storyboards. Voice recording has also been completed. The director described the project as “not quite a side story but more of a breather within the movie’s flow,” designed to address lingering questions in the narrative.

The SEED series has been a significant part of the Gundam franchise since its debut in October 2002, when Mobile Suit Gundam SEED became the first Gundam TV series of the 21st century. Its sequel, SEED DESTINY, followed in October 2004, with both series running for 50 episodes. The latest installment, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, premiered in January 2024, taking place one year after the events of DESTINY.
The announcement of FREEDOM ZERO coincided with news of another Gundam project titled “ALC ENCOUNTER,” though details about this project were not provided.
