“From the Showa era to the Heisei era, a new production of the giant monster “Gamera” that has been loved by monster fans around the world is in production! 『GAMERA -Rebirth-』 Worldwide distribution on Netflix!”
There isn’t much detail on what Gamera Rebirth will be but the fact that the teaser was released on the Kadokawa Anime youtube channel, likely means that it’s an animated project.
For those that don’t know, Gamera is a giant turtle kaiju, with the ability to fly by shooting rockets out of his shell. First appearing in the 1960s, Gamera has starred in 12 movies. The most well-known of these is the Heisei Gamera Trilogy directed by Shusuke Kaneko with the third movie, in particular, ‘Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris’ often being hailed as one of the best kaiju movies of all time.
With his last movie coming out in 2006, this will be the first new Gamera project in almost 20 years. Although a short movie was made in 2015 to commemorate the series’ 50th Anniversary.
We should also note that the Gamera Rebirth announcement tweet has also been retweeted by Hideo Kojima. Never pictured Kojima as a Gamera fan but that’s pretty cool.
