Atlus has revealed a new RPG called “Metaphor: ReFantazio” at the Xbox Games Showcase 2023. It is confirmed that this is their previously announced title that went under the codename of “Project Re Fantasy”.
You can watch the trailer for the game below:
Metaphor: ReFantazio is being directed by Katsura Hashino, the director of Persona 3-5 as well as Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. The art is also done by Shigenori Soejima who also designed the characters for the modern Persona games.
The game seems to share several gameplay similarities with Persona 5 including turn-based gameplay, a similar UI, and what looks like a similar bonding system to that of Persona’s social links. There are however notable differences including a vastly different setting with a futuristic medieval world and a greater emphasis on exploration, at least from what we can see in the trailer.
Metaphor was first announced back in 2017 as Project Re Fantasy, a new IP from Hashino that, as the name implies, would take place in a fantasy setting. Fans wouldn’t hear much from the game over the next five years other than the fact that it was still in development but it seems that it’s finally ready to be shown off.
The game will launch in 2024 and has been announced for Xbox and PC. Since this was an Xbox Showcase, it will likely be announced for PlayStation consoles at a later date.
Update – 16/06/23: Metaphor: ReFantazio has now been confirmed for PS4, PS5 and PC via Steam.
