Netflix has introduced their latest hire, the official Netflix Vtuber – the new face of the platform’s anime division.
Introducing herself as Enuko Mei Kuruno AKA N-ko chan, she describes herself as president of Netflix’s anime club, and speaks both English and Japanese. Netflix introduced the new Vtuber brand ambassador in a short video posted to their YouTube channel.
N-ko chan also pulled back the curtain a little on the actor behind her performance, saying that she’s a seasoned employee based out in California who knows her stuff when it comes to anime.
According to the video N-ko will be creating content for the Netflix Anime YouTube channel, introducing fans to Netflix’s anime line-up. She also mentioned collaborating with her “senpai”. Given Netflix doesn’t have its own line up of Vtubers that means she’ll probably be reaching out across the aisle to other Vtuber companies, though she hasn’t mentioned any by name.
According to the video N-ko will also be taking part in the usual Vtuber fair with singing streams, as well as game commentary. She also said she’ll be answering messages on Twitter and YouTube, and encouraged fans to reach out to her via these channels.
This isn’t the first time a brand has embraced the growing Vtuber trend. Last month Xbox partnered with two of Hololive’s Vtubers to promote GamePass in Japan.
Netflix’s Push For More Anime
This all appears to be part of Netflix’s increased push in their anime division. As it stands Netflix is the most prominent legal platform for viewing anime in the SEA region, due to bespoke anime sites like Crunchyroll not being available here, or having their selections seriously reduced.
Like it or not Vtubers and otaku culture go hand-in-hand now, so making a Vtuber the face of their anime line-up is a pretty clever idea. Considering the big boom of Vtuber content it makes sense that Netflix would go this route.
