The Square Enix 2Q FY2022/3 Financial Results Briefing has been posted and it seems that their latest RPG, NEO The World Ends With You or NEO TWEWY has not done as well as the company thought it would.
Here is what Square Enix had to say about the game’s sales:
This is a breakdown for the Digital Entertainment segment. The HD Game sub-segment released Life is Strange: True Colors and NEO: The World Ends with You in 2Q. We have plans to release Life is Strange: True Colors for Nintendo Switch, as well as Life is Strange Remastered Collection in the near future. We are hoping for both titles to continue to sell well over the long term. While NEO: The World Ends with You was well received by users, it has underperformed our initial expectations.
NEO TWEWY is the long-awaited sequel to Square Enix’s cult classic Nintendo DS RPG The World Ends With You, coming out over ten years after the first game to the delight of many fans.
The game was well-received by both critics and fans. I personally did the Gamerbrave’s review of the game and found it to be a fantastic new RPG and a possible contender for RPG of the year. As such, it is a shame that it did not sell as much as Square Enix hoped.
Many fans are specifically blaming the game’s lack of marketing, particularly for consoles that weren’t the Switch leading many to think it was a Switch exclusive if they even knew about it in the first place.
This will likely mean that we will not see a new TWEWY game for at least a good few years but I will say, if this is it for The World Ends With You, I’m glad it ended on a high note with NEO The World Ends With You.
