Cult-classic RPG The World Ends With You recently had a strange countdown on their website. As of the end of the countdown, we got a first look at the upcoming NEO: The World Ends With You.
This is an all new follow-up to the game, and will release Summer 2021 for PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
NEO: The World Ends With You has a similar premise to the original, featuring kids in Shibuya taking part in the deadly “Reaper’s Game”. It’s got a new cast, featuring characters like Rindo, Fret, Nagi and Minamimoto.
Unlike the previous game which was 2D, Neo is more like a 3D action-RPG. This is because the original The World Ends With You was made for the Nintendo DS, with combat centered around its stylus and touch screen.
However, from the trailer, we can see that a lot of the similar gameplay elements will be at play, such as the game’s pin system to install special abilities.
Square Enix has really been pushing to bring back The World Ends With You, as the series is featured in the secret ending for Kingdom Hearts 3. On top of that, it’s also getting an anime adaptation, based on the plot of the first game. While the two previous references seemed strange at first, the announcement of NEO: The World Ends With You is a good confirmation that Square Enix is looking into further developing the unique IP.
