The anime adaptation of Naoki Urasawa’s Monster is now available on Netflix in Malaysia and other regions, well at least to an extent.
As of this article, 30 episodes of the 74-episode series are now available to watch on Netflix in Japanese with English subs. There also seems to be a French dub of Monster available on Netflix.
Based on the manga by Naoki Urasawa (Master Keaton, 20th Century Boys) Monster is the story of Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a Japanese surgeon working in West Germany during the Cold War. Tenma is forced to choose between performing a life-saving operation on a young boy who was shot in the head or the mayor who came in slightly later. Wishing to challenge the political bias of the hospital (saving patients based on how much clout they could get), he decides to save the young boy simply because he came in first.
The mayor dies and Tenma’s reputation is disgraced. Years later a strange series of murders occur and The Doctor soon finds they’re attached to a single individual, the young boy, now a man that he saved all those years ago: Johan Liebert, a monster.
Monster has been praised as one of the best anime/manga of all time. A chilling crime thriller that also acts as a masterful character study of what causes someone to commit wrong. To this day, Johan is often considered one of the best villains in all of anime.
Hopefully, the rest of the episodes will make their way to the streaming platform soon. If you haven’t seen Monster yet I’d highly recommend it.
