The Nacon Revolution 5 Pro Controller is an asymmetric PlayStation 5 controller that offers revolutionary features to improve precision and gaming performance. Boasting sticks and triggers with magnetic Hall Effect technology, it also offers the ultimate freedom in customisation options.
Priced at RM1,199, prospective purchasers might wonder if it’s worth the investment. So, in this review, we will analyse the features of the Nacon Revolution 5 Pro Controller to see if it suits your personal style of gameplay.
Design and Build Quality
Although it’s designed for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC, the Nacon Revolution 5 Pro Controller features an asymmetrical stick layout similar to Xbox controllers, which some users might need time to adjust to if they are accustomed to the symmetrical layout of PlayStation’s DualSense.
When it comes to the buttons, the controller comes with rubberized grips that provide comfort and a secure hold. The grips are thicker and slightly shorter than those on the standard DualSense, which enhances comfort during long gaming sessions. The matte finish of the controller feels premium but tends to show fingerprints, which might be a minor inconvenience for some users.
The Hall Effect technology in the joysticks and triggers reduces the risk of stick drift, a common issue in many standard controllers. The controller also comes with a rounded D-pad, which is considered clunky and difficult to use. However, it also includes an optional cross-shaped D-pad that is more user-friendly.
Customization Options
The Nacon Revolution 5 Pro allows extensive physical customization with interchangeable sticks, D-pads, and weights. This modularity means users can tailor the controller’s physical attributes to their preferences.
The back of the controller features four customizable shortcut buttons that can be mapped to different actions, enhancing gameplay efficiency. We can manually switch to the Advanced Mode to activate back buttons.
We tried a few games to test the customizable buttons on the Nacon Revolution 5 Pro, including Elden Ring and FC24. I found that the shortcut buttons are particularly suitable for games with complex controls, such as Elden Ring. Normally, when using the DualSense, my right hand is always occupied, making it difficult to adjust the camera. However, with the Nacon’s customizable back buttons, I can use the right joystick to adjust the camera and simultaneously use the fingers holding the controller to trigger the back buttons, allowing me to perform two actions easily.
This sensitivity has both advantages and disadvantages, as due to their high sensitivity, the back buttons are quite easy to accidentally press, which can lead to unwanted activations of the assigned functions. For simpler games like FC24, the back buttons feel redundant because they don’t require complex operations. In such cases, activating the Advanced Mode makes it easy to accidentally activate certain controls, leading to unintended actions such as passing the ball when you didn’t intend to. Therefore, for these types of games, the customizable back buttons are not as necessary.
The controller can be further adjusted with Nacon’s customization app, available for PC and Mac (and soon for mobile), allowing users to adjust dead zones for joysticks and triggers, change the colors of the LED lights, and select different audio profiles. This level of customization helps users fine-tune the controller to their users’ specific needs.
Other Key Features
One of the unique features of the Nacon Revolution 5 Pro is its ability to pair directly with Bluetooth headphones, a feature not commonly found in other controllers. It also includes an adjustable weight system, allowing users to add or remove weights to achieve their desired heft. This feature is particularly beneficial for those who prefer a heavier or lighter feel depending on the game they are playing.
Performance
We found The Nacon Revolution 5 Pro’s performance to be praiseworthy, especially in FPS and third-person shooters. The adjustable triggers and customizable joystick heads provide enhanced precision and control. The controller comes preloaded with different profiles that can be switched depending on the game, which adjusts the joystick curve for improved precision based on the game genre.
Conclusion
The Nacon Revolution 5 Pro is a well-built, customizable controller that stands out for its extensive options and premium quality. While it offers significant advantages in terms of customization and build, the high price and some design quirks may make it less appealing compared to other options like the DualSense Edge. For users seeking a highly customizable and high-quality gaming experience, this controller is definitely worth considering.
