Trouble is brewing as the Outlaws of Thunder Junction expansion of Magic the Gathering (MTG) approaches, and we got an early opportunity to check out the set, thanks to our friends at Wizards of the Coast.
Outlaws of Thunder Junction is the 100th expansion of Magic The Gathering and is themed after Wild West tropes where villains and brigands arrive at the lawless plane of Thunder Junction to seek the treasures of The Vault. With that being said, let’s have a look at what’s within this expansion, with its Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander Decks, and Bundles.
Starting off, we have the Commander Decks, which feature characters Yuma, Oliva, Gonti, and Stella Lee as the commanders. The deck Desert Bloom is Yuma’s deck with him as “Yuma, Proud Protector” with a playstyle focusing on discarding Lands and sending them back for a powerful comeback.
Meanwhile, Olivia commands the Most Wanted deck as “Olivia, Opulent Outlaw“. This deck is described as having a focus on earning Treasure tokens and recruiting Outlaws to overwhelm the opponent. On the other hand, Gonti’s deck Grand Larceny is all about stealing cards and generating mana.
As for Stella Lee, her deck Quick Draw puts focus on casting multiple spells in quick succession, barraging your opponents.
There will, of course, be Collector Booster in this expansion as well, where you have a higher chance of pulling Foiled and Rare cards. As the expansion poster boy, the Collector Booster features the art of Oko the Shapeshifter fey planeswalker ready to pull out his gun in a quick draw duel against his opponent.
Not only is the Collector Booster featuring Oko, but the Play Booster also features all his glory as he stands proud and salutes you to unseal the packs.
Now for the treasure trove of every MTG expansion – the cards. And Outlaws of Thunder Junction does not disappoint with its selection, featuring some really unique card frames that truly fit the cards into the theme of Wild West.
If you are unaware, this expansion focuses a lot on the big bad villains as Oko assembles his gang of Outlaws.
As such Oko’s gang of Multiverse’s big bad, namely Vraska, Kellan, Annie Flash, Rakdos, and Tinybones, are all pullable from the packs with special “Most Wanted” card frames.
Aside from that, players can also get a chance to pull Breaking News Bonus Sheet cards, a collection of spell reprints stylized to look like old newspaper articles from the Prosperity Post. Of course, with an added chance to acquire a textured foil version of them.
Here are some more stunning cards available to pull in this expansion of Magic the Gathering as well as special art cards you could collect from the packs.
As with every MTG expansion, it is always exciting to unpack bundles and packs to unveil fresh new cards with epic art and cool mechanics to mess around with. If you want to know more about the expansion, here are the card types and mechanics you could expect, as well as our special card previews of “Doc Aurlock, Grizzled Genius” and “Hostile Investigator“.
Outlaws of Thunder Junction will be released in full for tabletop on April 19, 2024, and will be available in Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander Decks, Pre-release Packs, and Bundles.
