We’re back at it again with another card preview for Magic: The Gathering (MTG) and this time, we have the double-faced card Hydroelectric Specimen and Hydroelectric Laboratory, from the upcoming Modern Horizons 3 set, thanks to our friends at Wizards of the Coast.
As mentioned, both the Hydroelectric Specimen and Hydroelectric Laboratory will be a single card with double faces, more specifically it will be a modal double-faced card, denoted by the triangle symbols on the upper left-hand corner.
Starting with the Hydroelectric Specimen, a 3-cost Creature card with the Flash keyword, allowing you to summon it at any time. This creature looks to be a decent card to counterplay your opponents. To summon the Hydroelectric Specimen, you would need to spend 2 mana of any color and a blue mana, totaling up to 3 costs and it has a stat of 1/4.
The effect and card text of Hydroelectric Specimen are as follows:
Flash
When Hydroelectric Specimen enters the battlefield, you may change the target of target instant or sorcery spell with a single target to Hydroelectric Specimen.
Based on its description, it looks like Hydroelectric Specimen’s purpose is to redirect enemy fire into itself, acting as a meat shield to counter the opponent’s instant or spell. A decent card to ruin an opponent’s game plan especially when it comes to you protecting a powerful Creature of yours on the field or even stealing away buffs from your opponents.
Flipping the card, we will get Hydroelectric Laboratory, a Land card with the following text:
As Hydroelectric Laboratory enters the battlefield, you may pay 3 life. If you don’t, it enters the battlefield tapped.
Tap: Add 1 Blue Mana.
If you are looking to quickly build up Blue Mana resources, Hydroelectric Laboratory will be a good card for it as every time you tap it, you gain 1 Blue Mana to use for that turn. Note that when you first use the card, you may either pay 3 life or leave it as is and summon the card tapped.
And that’s it for this round’s card preview! The double-faced card Hydroelectric Specimen and Hydroelectric Laboratory will be available as part of the Modern Horizons 3 booster set for MTG, available June 14th, 2024. Our thanks to Wizards of the Coast for letting us check out this card ahead of the set’s release!
