Dark Souls-inpired RPG Mortal Shell has a release date, and it’s closer than you think. The gothic action game announced via a new trailer that it would come to consoles and PC August 18th.
The trailer also shows off more of the game’s environments, which look as bleak and weary through the game’s foggy atmosphere.
Coming Out Of Your Shell (While Armed)
We also get a glimpse of a new weapon in the game, a shoulder-mounted gun. Judging by the trailer, aiming with it will pull the game’s camera over the player’s shoulder.
Previously, we’ve only seen the games playable mortal shells used one at a time. However, this trailer shows the player switching between them mid-combat. Given how the game’s developers have said each mortal shell has a different playstyle, this would make it similar to style switching in Devil May Cry.
One of these skills includes a roll similar to the Old Hunter’s Bone in Bloodborne, allowing the player to turn invisible as they rolled. Similarly, a parry and riposte similar to the ones in Souls games is present.
Despite all the comparisons to Souls games, however, Mortal Shell has many mechanics born of the studio’s desire to make the genre their own. These include a hardening mechanic, which rewards timing to let you absorb hits. There’s also the game’s focus on names. The game will reveal a Mortal Shell’s name only after leveling up it up. Similarly, the game doesn’t tell you an item’s specific effect until it is used repeatedly.
Only two of the playable Shells in the game have received names, due to the names of the Mortal Shells being tied to progression in the game. These are Eredrim the Venerable and Tiel, both of which have received gameplay trailers. These gameplay reveals are all available via the Mortal Shell website.
Mortal Shell will be available on PS4, XBox One and PC via the Epic Games Store. A Steam version will be available at a later date.
