Mortal Shell, Cold Symmetry’s take on the punishing Souls-like, launches today.
While physical copies of the game aren’t currently available, you can buy the game on PSN, Xbox One or the Epic Game Store. A Steam version of the game won’t be available until 2021.
The game launched merely a week after announcing its release date.
Developers Cold Symmetry have been open about their inspiration from Dark Souls, saying they were big fans of the game. They’ve also put a lot of their own ideas into the genre, such as item descriptions that only reveal themselves after repeated use.
Coming Out of Its (Mortal) Shell, Doing Just Fine
The game has you inhabiting four mortal shells- acting as the game’s playable classes or jobs a la Final Fantasy. These classes all have unique tools that alter the way you play them. As you use them more, you will uncover more of their memories.
While the game has a dark fantasy look, it has fun with its weapons. In the most recent trailer we are shown the Ballistazooka, a powerful cannon the player can use. The Ballistazooka can also be aimed, switching players to an over-the-shoulder view.
Cold Symmetry’s founders released a joint statement about the game’s launch:
“Launching Mortal Shell worldwide is a dream come true,” said Cold Symmetry’s four co-founders –
Andrew McLennan-Murray, Anton Gonzalez, Dmitry Parkin, and Vitaly Bulgarov – in a joint statement.
“Our commitment to our fans is to create a soulslike game that is authentic, uncompromising and
unrelenting. We were humbled by the popularity of the beta and we closely studied the feedback we
received to create something that we are incredibly proud of.”
Mortal Shell is available for MYR129 (USD 29.99). Additionally, it can be bought for $16.24 on the Epic Games Store.
