For those of you who have eagerly anticipated the arrival of your friendly neighbourhood Joker to Mortal Kombat 11, well, he’s here and ready to put the smiles on everyone’s faces since 28 January 2020. We give one of DC’s most iconic villains a spin, to see how he’s been translated into the fighting game. Without further ado, here’s our Mortal Kombat 11 The Joker DLC review!
So who’s this clown with a walking stick?
The Joker is one of the newer additions to the roster of MK11 and carries the distinction of being one of, if not THE classic Batman series villains, having made his way into NetherRealm Studio’s game. He brings many styles of fighting and all looking equally humourous and unique. His main asset is the walking stick, that he can use it in a special move like in his Krushing Blow.
Over-the-top and gratuitous gore and action is certainly a Mortal Kombat signature, and Joker does not lose out to his peers in that aspect. He’s got moving special weapons among other things and without taking into account the variations you play, you need to understand the basics and functions of his kit.
One of Joker’s basic attacks is a live Batman doll. He’ll take out these dolls like puppets with three different movements. You can Parry, use ‘Batsy-poo’ as a long-range attack that shoots upwards, and ‘Batsy-pewpew’ as a downwards attack.
‘Bird Boy Beatdown’ a special attack, using his cane like that in the Injustice series. This is an overhead attack that will force a block. It adds a new layer to Joker’s moveset for his combos. It also has a strong Krushing Blow that requires three connections during a fight. It’s a move the opponent is forced to respect.
‘Grand Entrance’ is another move. While this is long range and the kick won’t necessarily hit the opponent, Joker’s cane can, and produce a Krushing Blow. ‘Clown Prince’ is a variation that fires and kicks the opponent in the middle, capable of up to 90% hurt with a combo. It’s potent and makes it harder for your opponent to avoid getting hit.
Another interesting combo is the ‘HarleQuinn of Hate’. He can extract a corpse on a wheelchair and swing it around to smack the opponent. This can cause up to 169% hurt for the upper- and mid-section of the opponent.
All Entertaining Specials
Joker’s Special Moves are a delight to behold for sure. The first is ‘Jack in the Box’, where Joker kicks a music box towards the opponent as a low attack. ‘Amplified’ with this move explodes the box and can be combo’d into.
‘Getting Lit’ gives the ‘Overtime’ attack. If the opponent walks into the ablaze area, Joker will get the hit. With ‘CCDDEGEC’, it looks similar to ‘Jack in the Box’ but an overhead attack instead that can be brought over to the opponent while active to explode.
Next up is the ‘Kapow’, with those joke boxing glove spring boxes that can be chained into a combo for a Krushing Blow’. ‘Corpsetrot’ throws an explosive corpse, which can also be Amplified to burn the ground below the opponent.
Continuing on with ‘Jumping Jester’, this also works similarly to ‘Jack in the Box’, but planted in the ground and fires into the opponent. ‘Hostage Hop’ features an unfortunate kidnap victim that will make their way to the opponent and explodes on command. Last but not least is the ‘Boing’ move, to evade attacks from short or long range.
Visceral Fatal Blow, Fatality and Brutality
Joker’s Fatal Blow is very nicely named ‘Smile’, which you can execute with L2 + R2 once you see an indication on the bar. You can also cancel it to continue a combo. From a farther distance, you can hold it until the opponent comes closer, upon which the Joker will use a Fatal Blow that the Joker ends with his signature smile on destroying the adversary.
Joker will give a Friendship cake in his ‘Party Pooper’ Fatality, that will explode and have a machine gun emerge from it to gun down the opponent. ‘Pop Goes the Mortal’ is another Fatality that will grace the opponent with Joker’s singing before he viciously strikes.
We’ve managed to unlock three Brutality for the Joker. ‘The Klassic’ simply unleashes a flurry of punches until the head rips right off. ‘Parry’ can become a Brutality where the opponent is assaulted with those Batman puppets. The ‘CCDDEGEC’ replaces the opponent’s head with ‘Jack in the Box’.
The rest of the Joker pack
As with other characters, you can change Joker’s skins and variations as you please. All his outfits, cane, hats and such have a variety of choices in ‘Kustomize Character’ with high quality fashion! In conclusion, the Joker DLC pack has a whole bunch of stuff to appeal to fans, with a moveset for the pros! Get it for the really fun kit, to say the least!
