Warner Bros Interactive and NetherRealm Studios have announced Mortal Kombat 1, the latest game in the long-running fighting game franchise.
Mortal Kombat I will serve as another reboot of sorts for the series, following the time travel plotline of Mortal Kombat 11. Here is the cinematic announcement trailer for the game that was recently released:
“A new era has begun. It’s In Our Blood. Discover a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe created by Fire God Liu Kang. Mortal Kombat 1 ushers in a new era of the iconic franchise with a new fighting system, game modes, and Fatalities”!
While no gameplay footage has been shown of the title, the cinematic trailer has revealed several characters who will presumably be on the roster. These consist of:
- Liu Kang
- Kung Lao
- Raiden
- Scorpion
- Sub-Zero
- Kitana
- Mileena
- Shang Tsung (as pre-order DLC)
Furthermore, NetherRealm has announced that since they cannot add every fan’s favorite character to the roster they will instead be having an Assist character called ‘Kameo Fighters’ that can be summoned to perform an attack. We haven’t been told how exactly these will work but it sounds similar to the first Marvel vs Capcom game.
The exact details of Mortal Kombat 1’s plot have not been unveiled however the trailer seems to convey that it will take place in a new timeline much like how Mortal Kombat (2011) did. The key difference here is that the Earthrealm Faction now seems to be led by Liu Kang after ascending to being a fire god at the end of Mortal Kombat 11.
Mortal Kombat 1 will launch for PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on the 19th of September 2023.
