It’s time to take monster hunting to the tabletop. With Monster Hunter: World the boardgame, Steamforged Games aims to carry the spirit of the game as a tabletop experience.
In an exclusive interview with Polygon, Steamforged Ganes CEO Mat Hart and Lead Designer Sherwin Matthews talked about a lot of the ideas that went into the game.
Bringing The Hunt To Tabletop
The game will use several features to better translate the game into tabletop format. One of these is a set campaign length, with actions costing days. Activities like crafting and scouting will consume days, so you’ll have to plan your actions wisely.
Moreover, the game will use weapons to act as classes. According to Steamforged, the Monster Hunter boardgame will use a combo-based system with cards representing different moves. Combos will come at the cost of stamina, as well as as-of-yet-undescribed openings for bosses to exploit.
Monster Hunter’s weapon sharpening also appears in the game, as players will need to sharpen and regain spent attack cards.
Similar to an MMO, they say that dealing with bosses will also be about managing the boss’ “aggro”. Rather than have a more linear aggro system like Dark Souls The Boardgame, Monster Hunter will have many methods to grab a monster’s attention.
Similar to Steamforged’s other titles, Monster Hunter The Board Game will also come with plastic miniatures. According to the developers, the current plan is to have 4 monsters and one biome. If the Dark Souls boardgame is any indication, they will likely have future expansions for more monsters and biomes.
While many of the details regarding the game are not set in stone yet, Steamforged says the game will release in the USD 100 (MYR 416.90) price range.
Steamforged Games also announced a kickstarter for the boardgame, that would start some time next year. They have a particularly impressive portfolio of videogame-based adaptations, most notably being Dark Souls: The Boardgame and Resident Evil 2: The Boardgame.
