The classic Mobile Suit Gundam anime is coming to popular streaming site Crunchyroll, the platform confirms. It’s available to stream in multiple countries.
According to the Crunchyroll website, the anime will be available in the following territories:
- North America
- Central America
- South America
- Europe
- Africa
- Oceania
- Middle East
They will stream both the English dub and subtitled versions, of the 1979 anime.
The anime was previously also available to stream via Funimation, who recently acquired Crunchyroll.
Mobile Suit Gundam, also referred to as 0079 is the anime that kicked off the Gundam mega franchise, spanning multiple anime, movies and videogames. Legally watching the original anime has been a bit of a herculean task especially in the west, as many Gundam anime have avoided being licensed out to streaming platforms.
While the original Mobile Suit Gundam is just as elusive in countries like Malaysia, it’s admittedly a lot easier to catch up with the rest of the Gundam back-catalogue as Netflix has big-hitters like Gundam Unicorn and Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. Additionally, the Sunrise YouTube channel frequently rotates its catalogue showing multiple Gundam anime at a time.
With the elusive series coming to more streaming platforms, it’s hard to not get optimistic that Asian fans outside of Japan would get some way to legally watch one of the defining anime of the mecha genre, either by it coming to either Netflix or Sunrise’s YouTube channel, or by Crunchyroll finally setting up shop in the region.
