Malaysia is the latest reveal of an apparent ASEAN arc for the Hetalia World Stars manga. Author of the series, Himaruya Hidekaz, posted the sketches and rough drafts of his design on Twitter, a few days ahead of the weekly release of a chapter through Shounen Jump Plus. If you were one of the manga’s fans back in the day, this reveal comes almost over a decade since it began serialization.
Malaysia joins his ASEAN brethren in Hetalia World Stars, with Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines being part of the newest comic strips. Thailand and Vietnam were the only personifications from the region for a long while, though of course, weren’t the only Asian nations.
If you look up the #hwsmalaysia tag, you’re likely to see a number of memes that have spawned, dubbing Malaysia’s personification as a cat boy due to his hair mimicking a tiger, itself the nation’s national animal (Malayan Tiger to be specific).
The anime adaptation has begun airing again through various streaming services in Japan, where presumably this motley crew may one day also be voiced and animated.
