A surprising bomb dropped and landed on our Vault, greeting us with the beautiful dilapidated world of Fallout in a new collaboration set coming to Magic: The Gathering, courtesy of our friends at Wizards of the Coast.
In collaboration with Bethesda, this latest set for the Universes Beyond series brings the atompunk retrofuturistic world of the post-war 1950s United States of Fallout into the cards of Magic: The Gathering.
The crossover set comes in four reconstructed Commander decks and Collector Boosters and will be played in the free-for-all Commander format. Dive into the post-nuclear alternate reality because the cards are all adorned with Fallout themed illustrations and some are even decorated with card frames inspired by the Pip-Boy, the iconic wearable computer watch in the series.
As mentioned, there will be four Commander decks available for this set, each based on the iconic characters or factions in the Fallout series.
Scrappy Survivors
The first Commander deck with every survivor’s favorite best friend and good boy, Dogmeat from Fallout 4 as its commander.
“He’ll sniff out rare loot, track down dangerous enemies, fetch useful items, and protect his allies in battles. All he asks in return is food, pets, and a place to play with his favorite teddy bear.”
Hail, Caesar
We then have “Hail, Caesar”, a Commander deck based on the leader of Caesar’s Legion in the Mojave Wasteland of Fallout: New Vegas. While ruthless, Caesar is Mojave’s quirkiest warlord with an affinity for collecting pre-war collectibles, such as rare teddy bears and vintage Nuke-Cola bottles, adding an eccentric flair to his otherwise brutal reign.
Mutant Menace
The nuclear Wasteland is inhabited with grotesque monstrosities and none as revered as the Wise Mothman, a local legend told throughout Appalachia even before the Great War. This cryptid is said to bestow gifts and knowledge upon fortunate travelers and loyal cultists, but be wary because this mutant is not the only one lurking in the Wasteland.
Science!
Harness the power of technology and follow Dr. Madison Li of the Institute for our fourth Commander Deck. Dr. Madison Li is one of the brightest scientific minds in the world of Fallout and has been fighting for the future of humanity in The Capital Wasteland and The Commonwealth.
RadAway!
Going in theme with the horrors of nuclear warfare, Fallout will introduce a new mechanic called Radiation, whereby players would gain “rad” counters from various card effects, which is similar to Poison, where the counter is placed on players rather than objects. The effect would then trigger at the player’s pre-combat main phase, forcing the player to mill a card for each rad counter they have, then lose 1 life whenever a nonland card is milled this way, removing a rad counter.
In addition to Radiation, the set will also see the return of Energy, Proliferate, and Squad mechanics, alongside older ones such as Battalion, Enrage, Exploit, Fortigy, Morbid, Raid, and Split Second.
The iconic Vaults of Fallout will be represented by Sagas and new artifact subtypes such as Bobblehead and Junk are also introduced in this set.
Speaking of Bobblehead cards, you might get a chance to obtain specially serialized Vault Boy bobblehead cards from the Collector Booster packs.
Step foot into the Wasteland in this Vault-Tec approved Fallout collaboration set, coming to Magic: The Gathering and available on March 8th, 2024. Our thanks to Wizards of the Coast for letting us check out the set ahead of its epic release!
