Wizards of the Coast has provided more details about their upcoming Magic: The Gathering set, “Duskmourn: House of Horror,” as its release date approaches. The company has already launched prerelease events, giving players a sneak peek at the horror-themed expansion set to hit tabletop on September 27.
Duskmourn is described as a plane-enveloping House that brings players’ worst nightmares to life. The set’s story follows a rescue squad of Planeswalkers – including Niko, Tyvar, The Wanderer, Zimone, and Kaito – as they search for Nashi, the missing son of Planeswalker Tamiyo.
The new set introduces several mechanics to enhance the horror theme:
- Room cards: Enchantments representing locations in the house that players can explore.
- Manifest dread: A keyword action allowing players to create face-down 2/2 creatures.
- Impending: A mechanic for “Overlord” cards that enter as non-creatures and transform over time.
- Survival: Abilities that trigger when tapped creatures survive combat.
- Eerie: Triggers when enchantments enter the battlefield or when exploring rooms.
- Delirium: A returning keyword granting improved effects based on graveyard composition.
- Glimmer: New enchantment creatures that persist as enchantments after death.
Duskmourn also features unique card treatments, including Full Art Manor Lands, Paranormal Frame cards, Double Exposure cards, and Mirror Monster cards. In addition, collector Boosters will contain rare Japanese Showcase cards, including a “Damnation” Special Guest card designed by Silent Hill creature designer Masahiro Ito.
Moreover, the set will be available in various product lines, including Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander Decks, Prerelease Packs, and Bundles. Wizards of the Coast will release a special “Nightmare Edition” Bundle on October 18, 2024. With its focus on horror themes and innovative mechanics, Duskmourn: House of Horror promises to offer Magic: The Gathering players a unique and thrilling experience when it releases later this month.
