Netflix has announced the release date for its upcoming animated film Maboroshi, animated by Studio MAPPA.
In a trailer announcing the project, Netflix confirmed that Maboroshi would release on January 15th 2024.
The film tells the story of Masamune, a boy in a town that’s been trapped in time following a Steel Mill explosion.
As a result, the town has gained one major rule: don’t change anything.
While the trailer doesn’t go into explicit detail of how that works the main thing at play as far as the story is concerned is to not fall in love, with what appears to be deadly consequences if you break it.
However, Masamune meets two girls, Mutsumi and Itsumi, and his life starts to change.
The movie seems to be going for an extreme coming-of-age angle- describing Masamune as a boy with an unstoppable urge to fall in love.
From his antagonistic relationship with Mutsumi to how warmly he takes care of Itsumi, this looks like a good tear jerker in just how miserable it is to be a teenager with complicated feelings.
Studio MAPPA has been one of the highest-profile studios in the animation industry, being behind projects like Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen.
