Paramount Pictures is reportedly working on a live action Beyblade movie, based off the anime about battling tops.
According to Deadline, Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the movie, with Neil Widener and Gavin James on the script for the popular series.
Considering Paramount Pictures has also produced the Transformers and GI Joe Live action movies, it’s understandable that they’d be working on a live action Beyblade, since the toys are also distributed by Hasbro internationally.
Obviously, the project is still super early on in development, early enough that there’s been no rumors of Tom Holland or Chris Pratt being involved with the project.
Beyblade is about as peak early 2000s as it gets- one of many anime about a competitive sport built around toys you can also buy in the real world. It features bowl-shaped stadiums, special moves as well as “Bit Beasts”, seemingly magical spirits emerging from the top to wage battle against other tops.
The plot even goes to ridiculous enough lengths to say that Moses parted the red sea with a Beyblade- a factoid beloved by all fans and constantly brought up in conversation to anyone who asks.
While fans may complain about the quality, the strategy of taking beloved children’s properties and turning them into flashy live action movies has ultimately worked out- the Transformers movies are some of the pinnacle of box office hits, all without the need of a “cinematic universe” .
