During our time at MYDCF 2023 Opening Keynote Presentation, MDEC Director Mohan Low came on stage and kicked off the event by discussing the convergence and disruptions happening in the creative industries.
Mohan Low Han Sen is the Director of Digital Content Development at Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) as well as a games industry expert.
Low started the talk by discussing the MYDCF event itself and his aim to help grow the creative industries in Southeast Asia (SEA), acknowledging the efforts made by the region in recent years.
In his words, the MYDCF used to be a 300-men event but has grown to accommodate more than 3,000 people in recent years and he hoped that there will be 4,000 attendees this year.
Saying that it is important for creative people to express themselves and grow.
According to Low, “There has been a convergence between all the industries.”
He further explained that aside from video games and animations, the industry has expanded into other spaces such as extended reality and the metaverse.
To add, Low said that there have been disruptions happening in the industries in recent years, from the rise of artificial intelligence to decentralized tech, as well as the popularity of subscription-based game services and so forth.
As explained, all of these new mediums and technology will impact the industry and it may hinder creative growth due to the fear of change.
“As a region, we need to be aware and take advantage of these disruptions.”
Director Low ends his speech by saying, “We need to embrace this change and grasp your ambition for greater things.”
