LEVEL UP KL 2020 To Be Held Virtually

**UPDATE: MDEC has released a statement saying that speakers from Microsoft and Sony will no longer be attending LEVEL UP KL 2020. Instead it will feature speakers from Steam, Roblox, Larian Studios and Ubisoft Singapore.

One of the biggest events for the local game development scene, LEVEL UP KL 2020, is being held virtually this year. The event will run from October 10th to November 22 2020. Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) is organizing the event.

Almost Two Months Of Events

The one-and-a-half month-long event kicks off with the South East Easia Game Jam, where over 100 game developers will be invited to compete for up to RM6000 in prizes.

The next event is the Business Connection, a virtual meeting where developers can connect with various industry experts. This mainline event is particularly great for small indie developers. This is because they can use this to make good business connections.

There will also be a two-day Industry Conference. It will feature speakers from big industry names like Larian Studios and Ubisoft Singapore, who will give talks for anyone wanting to learn the ins and outs of the games industry. It also runs concurrently with the Business Expo, a trade event for local and regional videogames.

During this period, there will also be Masterclass sessions and a Virtual Career Fair to help people break in to the industry.

Another mainline event will be the SEA Game Showcase, which runs from October 19th to November 15th. This event will feature promotions and demos for various games developed within the South East Asia region.

It all culminates in the SEA Game Awards, which aims to recognize outstanding performance in local and regional game development.

This event will also have eSports webinars, as well as an eSports tournament with a RM120,000 prize pool for participants.

High Expectations

MDEC CEO Surina Shukri says that although the ongoing pandemic has caused trouble for events this year, the surge in popularity of videogames would reflect well on LEVEL UP KL 2020’s virtual attendance.

“With the pandemic forcing many to work from the comforts of their homes, we are also witnessing a spike in the popularity of video games that are primarily an at-home type activity”, she says. “Therefore, we are positive that this trend will be reflected in this edition of LEVEL UP KL as we are expecting to reach 5,000,000 people via social media and record 50,000 registered visitors for its first-ever virtualised event”.
