The Korea Fair Trade Commission is currently investigating KRAFTON and Com2us under suspicion of misrepresenting and silently manipulating the rates in some of their gacha games.
According to an article posted by Naver, PUBG: Battlegrounds by KRAFTON and Starseed: Asnia Trigger by Cum2us are currently being investigated by the commission.
In Korea, gacha games are required by law to publicly display their gacha rates accurately. As such, the two games are alleged to have caused consumer damage by disclosing false information information about the gacha rates, including the actual item pool and drop percentages.
2 months ago in April 2024, the Korean Fair Trade Commission started investigating Ragnarok, MU Archangel and Nightcrows as some of them allegedly had dismal drop rates compared to the stated ones, such as a 0% rate for first 150 pulls in MU Archangel or drop rates up to 8 times lower than what was listed in Ragnarok.
As a result of that investigation, the commission fined Nexon Korea 11.64 billion Won earlier this year, making it the largest fine ever imposed under the Korean E-commerce Act. Nexon was also guilty of setting the drop rates of certain gacha items to 0, while failing to inform users about it.
Officials from KRAFTON and Com2us said, “It should be seen as a general inspection, not an investigation of specific games,” and that they will “sincerely cooperate with the KFTC.”
A collective dispute mediation process is also underway to provide relief to users who have suffered damages due to deceptive behavior by online game service providers. As a result, more than 6,000 people have applied for collective dispute mediation, and the number of inquiries is expected to to increase.
