Kotaku, Gizmodo and other news sites under the G/O Media have all gone on strike as part of the Gizmodo Media Group (GMG) Union, due to their employer failing to meet the union’s demands.
“As of March 1, GMG Union is officially on strike. We’re asking people not to click on—or contribute content to—@Gizmodo, @Jalopnik, @Jezebel, @Kotaku, @Lifehacker and @TheRoot”, GMG Union said in a tweet.
On their website, the GMG Union explained that this strike was born from G/O Media’s refusal to negotiate over the Union’s demands.
“Since January 31, the Gizmodo Media Group Union (GMG Union) and G/O’s Media’s outside counsel have met five times.”, the website reads. “Every session, the company’s outside counsel sidestepped and delayed, refusing to provide written counterproposals to the union’s good-faith proposals. How can you bargain a contract when the people across the table won’t even clearly state what they’re advocating for?
The website has a list of demands from the union, which contain but are not limited to:
- Better pay on par with current inflation
- Trans-inclusive healthcare
- Diversity hiring initiatives
Even Peter Rojas, founder of Gizmodo expressed his solidarity with the writers in a tweet:
