Konami has decided to give itself a slight name change from ‘Konami’ to ‘Konami Group Holdings’. It’s not a big change, but there you go.
This will potentially be done on the 1st of July 2022 at a shareholder’s meeting. If the shareholders agree to the name change, Konami will put it in place. The will mark the 50th anniversary of Konami with the corporation aiming to “take on new challenges” and grow further.
This is Konami’s statement regarding the name change:
“Since its establishment, the Company has expanded its business as a pioneer in the Japanese entertainment industry and now operates in four business segments: Digital Entertainment, Amusement, Gaming & Systems, and Sports. In marking the Company’s 50th anniversary since its establishment, we will change the trade name so that we, along with its group companies, will continue to take on new challenges and strive for further growth as a sustainable company.”
Unfortunately, Konami’s idea of celebrating its 50th anniversary is selling Castlevania NFTs featuring screenshots of games that have been around for the last 30 years.
The company in general has been on thin ice with gamers since they stopped making larger console games following the departure of Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima in 2015. It’s a real shame considering they were once the video game powerhouse behind Silent Hill, Contra, Castlevania, Metal Gear, and many more. Although Super Bomberman R for Switch was pretty good.
